Vestibular Tests

Vestibular testing comprises a series of tests that are performed when one is feeling dizzy. These tests are used to determine whether some imbalance in the inner ear causes dizziness.

Diagnostic Tests for the Vestibular System

It is essential to jot down the exact reasons and causes of dizziness to cure it. Tests are performed for the same, including measuring head movements, eye movements, hearing, and so on. It is thorough and precise and accurately identifies inner ear disorders. 

 A battery of tests is administered in most cases. The most common ones include:

1. Electronystagmography (ENG).  These tests measure the eye movements via electrodes placed around the eyes. These are quite effective and widely performed for vertigo and dizziness patients.
2. Videonystagmography (VNG).  This process also measures eye movements but uses a video camera connected to a pair of goggles.
3. Rotary Chair Tests.  This test is used to determine if the symptoms are related to a brain disorder or an ear disorder. It measures eye movements in response to analogous head movements.
4. Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP).  These tests determine the coordination of the vestibular, visual, and sensory systems to maintain balance. The patient is to stand on a platform and follow a target while the platform moves and record the body swaying degrees. It comprises an Adaptation Test and a Motor Control Test to measure the reflexes to sudden movements.
5. Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potential (VEMP).  It is used to ascertain if the saccule and the vestibular nerves are functioning well. It includes the use of electrodes that are attached to the neck while sounds are passed from a pair of headphones. It is done to record the electrical response of the sternocleidomastoid muscle located in the neck.
