Throat examination is essential in detecting severe conditions like head and neck cancers and must be carried out with precision. Headlights, head mirrors, telescopes, and other instruments like tongue depressors and spatulas are used to examine different areas. Palpation of the neck is a crucial step and must be done accurately to detect the presence of lumps or swelling in and around the neck. A headlight or head mirror and telescope are used for the throat examination. A laryngoscopy or idle mirror is used to examine the larynx. Local anesthesia is used if and when required. All areas of the throat – the mouth, gums, lips, tongue, oral mucosa, soft and hard palate, and pharynx should all be inspected well.
