Nose Symptoms

  1. Blocked nose
A blocked nose can be the result of a cough, congestion, stuffy nose, or microbial infection. Sometimes structural deformities in the bone structure may also cause a blockage. A detailed examination and analysis are required to jot down the actual reasons for the stoppage. Generally, this condition can be treated with anti-inflammatory medicines, and surgery is seldom needed. In the case of allergies, determining the allergen is extremely vital to avoid them in the future and medications.
  2. Sinusitis
Sinusitis is a condition that occurs due to the swelling or inflammation of the hollow cavities lining the nasal passages. These cavities are called sinuses. When the sinuses are blocked with viscous fluids, it leads to microbial growth that may cause an infection. Causes of sinuses include the common cold, tiny growths in the nasal lining (known as polyps), and a deviation in the septum. People with weaker immune systems are quite prone to sinusitis. Acute sinusitis may occur due to cold and or allergic reactions and is short-term. This causes the production of additional mucous amounts, irritation, and difficulty in breathing. This condition generally resolves on its own with time and doesn’t require medication. Sub-acute sinusitis refers to a worse state than acute sinusitis, lasting about 4-6 weeks. Chronic sinusitis lasts much longer (about eight weeks) and may be a result of an infection in the sinuses. Recurrent sinusitis occurs repetitively throughout the year for prolonged periods. Primary antibiotic medication is given to the patient, which, upon failure, is backed by surgeries like endoscopy, sinuplasty, and so on.
  3. Nose Bleeds/Epistaxis
Nose bleeding or epistaxis is a relatively common condition in both children and adults. It may be treated quickly without a physician’s help using nose pressing and antibiotic creams. Only if these cures do not work, one must consult an expert ENT physician for the nosebleeding. In rare cases, this condition might be a symptom of an underlying serious problem in adults. People experiencing nose bleeds accompanied by blockage or pain must consult an expert care provider immediately. This condition is treated using a nasal packing with absorbent packs or, rarely, surgically using a cautery stick under a local anesthetic’s influence in a relatively simple procedure.
  4. Broken nose/Bent nose
A broken nose is quite an expected outcome of road traffic accidents or other such incidents and may be mended rather easily if treated early. Once the bones are set in the new frame, it becomes difficult to repair the structure. The bones need to be re-broken and amended in a relatively complicated surgical procedure, septorhinoplasty or rhinoplasty. Early treatment involves a simple procedure under the influence of a local anesthetic. Nose amendment procedures are also carried out for cosmetic purposes, as some people may not be satisfied with the shape of their noses. Rhinoplasty is a multi-purpose surgery as it improves both the function and aesthetics of the nose and can be customized to some extent to suit individual patients.
  5. Snoring (including obstructive sleep apnea)
Snoring is a quite common issue, with most adults facing it at some point in their lives. This condition is more prevalent in males and not exclusive to males. Snoring may occur individually or be the symptom of an underlying, more sinister issue called sleep apnea, in which the patient has a few episodes wherein he stops breathing at night. This leads to nasty effects on the sleeping patterns and metabolism, making them tired throughout the day.  The main aspects in overcoming snoring, including or not including obstructive sleep apnea, are:

    • A considerable margin of people who snore, particularly those with sleep apnea, is well above the healthy Body Mass Index (above 25). Weight loss can be helpful to this group of people.
    • Hypothyroidism. People suffering from sleep apnea or snoring must get their thyroid functions checked.
    • Nasal obstruction or blockage due to any given reason may deteriorate snoring or lead to sleep apnea.
    • Alcohol consumption before bedtime might worsen the snoring problem. Surgery is the final option for the treatment of snoring when all other cures have failed. Procedures like UVPP or LVUP are available to choose from after considering all essential aspects. Another non-surgical device called the CPAP can be helpful to improve the sleep quality and the health of the individual.
