Nose Examination
Nose examination can be done using headlights or head mirrors and nasal endoscopes and lamps—initial examination checks on any cosmetic distortion. Further, the nasal cavity is checked, including the appearance of the mucus and other microbial activity. Small children require parents or guardians around to hold their heads up and keep them still during the examination. Nasal endoscopy is performed for detailed inspection. A local anesthetic is employed to numb the nose, and the endoscope with a fiber-optic light is inserted through the nostrils. The drug makes the process pain-free, but the patient may still feel a sensation with the movement of the endoscope. Procedures like rhinomanometry or rhinometry are done to check the airflow through the nostrils. Other smaller procedures are performed to test the smelling capacity.
